The Dahlia Dreams series, Summer/Fall 2020, was made in attempt to slow down my process. I’m usually kind of a tornado in the studio and made this small series as a challenge to break up my reactive nature.
I had difficulty letting go of having a representational element in these pieces. As I spent much of the summer outside, with my four year old son, observing and documenting nature, and working on two flower farms in southwest Michigan, I decided that these stark photographic dahlias, fresh from the flower field, were just what many of the pieces in this series needed to feel complete.
*As a gesture of gratitude for the opportunity to work outside, for some inspiring women farmers, and with flowers nonetheless, I am continually donating 50% of sales from Dahlia Dreams shirts and designated prints to The Urban Growers Collective in Chicago.
